Palácio da Ajuda

Architect João Carlos Santos

Palácio da Ajuda (in English, Ajuda Palace) is a Neoclassic building started in 1795, but never actually finished.

Only one third of the building itself has been completed, and for decades the Western façade has remained untouched and with exposed bricks and stone masonry.
In 2014 a new project to finish this western façade was chosen, and between the years of 2018 and 2020 the building was finally completed.

The new “wing” brings a fresh look to the building, sewing together centuries of architecture into a well arranged architectural project.
