Dvergur

Trípólí Architects

Dvergur apartments is located just south of Reykjavík, in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. The development sits on the site of a former three-story timber factory called Dvergur, built in the 1960s. The area is nestled under a cliff, next to the town’s stream and behind the old church. The site is surrounded by historic wooden houses, many of which were clad with corrugated iron and date back to the early 20th century.

The Design

The design proposal includes five detached apartment buildings. These buildings take inspiration from the old structures in the neighborhood. The new buildings surround a central garden, which serves as a meeting space for residents. The architecture features pitched roofs and corrugated iron cladding, reflecting the traditional appearance of the surrounding homes but with a modern twist.

Each building is unique, with its own signature color. Dvergur apartments vary in size, containing between one and six units. Each apartment has a private entrance directly from the central garden. This design promotes a sense of community while maintaining privacy for each resident.

The ground floors of the buildings are dedicated to shops and services. This design choice brings life to the street and supports the local economy. A café or restaurant is planned for the northwest corner, further activating the space behind the old church. The project also includes a parking garage located beneath the central garden. No parking spaces are above ground, preserving the open space for residents and visitors.

The Photographer’s View

As an architecture photographer in Iceland, this project offers many opportunities to capture the blend of old and new. The design balances the historical context of Hafnarfjörður with modern architectural elements. For an Iceland architectural photographer, the complex’s unique combination of materials and its connection to the surrounding environment create a compelling subject. The mix of traditional corrugated iron and modern finishes provides an interesting visual narrative, making it a perfect subject for architectural photography.
