The Bio Building project is a long-term experimental and development initiative led by Ludika Architects. From the outset, the project explores new ways of building in Iceland. In particular, it focuses on using Icelandic hemp as a sustainable building material. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a foundation for alternative and environmentally responsible construction in the country.
As a first step, Ludika Architects designed and built a full-scale prototype. Through this prototype, the team actively tests and verifies how hemp concrete performs under Icelandic weather conditions. Moreover, grants and financial support played a crucial role in turning the project into reality.
Design Inspiration and Construction Process
The prototype takes inspiration from the philosophy of Japanese teahouses, which emphasize simplicity, small scale, and a close connection to nature. Therefore, the design integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. Construction began in May 2023 and, shortly after, reached completion in the fall of the same year.
In addition, a group of itinerant craftsmen (Wandergesellen) joined the construction process. As a result, their experience, practical knowledge, and ingenuity directly supported the successful realization of the small house.
Materials and Building Performance
Throughout the project, the team prioritized local building materials whenever possible. Consequently, local materials appear in the foundations, structural frame, exterior cladding, and seaweed screens. At the same time, this approach reinforces the project’s commitment to sustainability.
