Two Single-Family Villas Overlooking the Port in Hafnarfjörður

This architectural project consists of two single-family villas in Hafnarfjörður, carefully positioned on sloping terrain above the waterfront. Set on higher ground than the port, the houses enjoy uninterrupted views while remaining protected from the waterline and coastal conditions.

Large, floor-to-ceiling windows face the Hafnarfjörður port, framing views of the harbor, ships, and changing light throughout the day. As a result, the interiors feel open, bright, and deeply connected to the surrounding maritime landscape.

Architecture Shaped by Site and Materiality

The design responds directly to the natural slope of the site. By stepping the volumes along the terrain, the project creates a strong relationship between architecture and topography. This approach also ensures privacy from the street while opening the living spaces toward the port.

Materiality plays a central role in the architectural expression. Raw concrete anchors the villas to the ground and forms a robust base. Basalt stone, sourced locally, adds texture and weight, while wood introduces warmth and contrast to the restrained exterior palette. Together, these materials reflect both Icelandic building traditions and contemporary design.

Light, Views, and Contemporary Living

Inside, generous window openings and double-height spaces draw daylight deep into the homes. At the same time, carefully framed views turn the port into an integral part of everyday living. The layout supports modern family life, balancing openness with clearly defined zones for living, dining, and rest.

By combining strong material character, thoughtful site adaptation, and expansive port-facing windows, these Hafnarfjörður villas offer a contemporary interpretation of single-family housing rooted in place, landscape, and light.
